On the 10th of September a senior grading was held at Sensei Darren's Sunshine Dojo in
Melbourne. Samurai New Zealand had 5 Karate-ka attempting Black Belt grades.
It was a great night of solid Shukokai karate which lasted for about 3.30hrs and our
students performed with excellence and tremendous karate spirit, to say that I was proud
would be an understatement.
The successful Karate-ka and thir new grade:
- Sensei Glen Hardinge - Nidan
- Sensei Jethro Hardinge - Nidan
- Sensei Geoff Shirley - Shodan
- Sensei Aaron Blackledge - Shodan
- Sensei Johana Hotzel - Shodan Ho
Congratulations to all five of you! Well done.

Shukokai Karate Organisations 60th Anniversary - Japan
This year marked the 60th anniversary of the Shukokai Karate Organisation in Japan. Shukokai was founded in 1949 by Chojiro Tani 9th Dan (now deceased).
Samurai Karate NZ is a member of the Shukokai World Karate Association based in Kobe, Japan. As such Sensei Andrew Kowanjko, 4th Dan and New Zealand Chief Instructor, was invited to travel to Japan to help celebrate this major occasion as part of an International contingent. It took place over 4 days and included training with Japanese Chief Instructor Sensei Kawata 9th Dan, an examination, in which Sensei Andrew from Onehunga was awarded the title of Kenshi (recognition of human development), a tournament (which included a demonstration by Japanese and international instructors) and a celebration dinner and awards ceremony to conclude the event.
“The four days were an amazing experience of cultural learning and exchange with wonderful locals who showed great hospitality and a strong commitment for future ties between Japanese and Western Karate”, said Sensei Andrew.
